Our History

In the beginning, they used kerosene lamps for light and a wood stove for heat. Mt Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church was formed as a labor of love.

A group of people from the community of Johnson met on June 6, 1929, for the purpose of organizing a Baptist church in the community.  The following were present; Brother and Sister J.H. Gottman, Brother and Sister L.B. Dickenson, Brother U.G. Smith, and Brother and Sister H.D. Steele. The next week, a building and an acre of land was acquired from the Methodist Church and services began.

In 1939, while the new Johnson school was being built, they had school in Mt Pleasant's building. Around 5 p.m. on October 14, 1939, the church building burnt down.

We had $800 from insurance. A new building was built, with materials costing $1,226.58. All labor was donated, including the hauling of sand and gravel.

On October 2, 1940, the first prayer meeting was held in the new building. There were 38 people present. Dedication of the new building was on July 20, 1941. (Picture top right corner.)

On June 6, 2004, our church celebrated 75 years, with Jimmy Hoffman as Pastor. At which time, the church was making plans for a new building.

The new building was built and the past year (2023) we paid off the note. (Picture below.)

Mt. Pleasant has stood the test of time and are on our 94th year in existence. God has used us in so many ways over the years. Yet He's not done yet! Join us, as we get closer to a new century of spreading God's word with our community and the World around us!
